Organizations

There are two kinds of technical organizations, those whose members are primarily the practitioners of a field and those whose members are the companies supplying the practitioners.  The practitioner organizations are usually thought of as "Professional" and include such bodies as the American Medical Association and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.  "Trade" organizations have companies as members.  The National Electrical Manufacturers Association and the Iron and Steel Institute are examples.

In photonics, as well, there are both kinds although due to the technical nature of the subject matter, the distinction is often not as clear as in other fields.  Many technical trade organizations allow individual members and many professional organizations have corporate sustaining members.  In either case, the organizations are usually involved in promotion of the art and business, job placement, political action, standards development and public relations.  Many organizations make most of their money from trade shows they sponsor, not dues.

SPIE
Founded as the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers by practitioners of high-speed photo instrumentation, it now uses only the original initials and bills itself as the "International Society for Optical Engineering" though its purview is much broader than optics.  SPIE sponsors dozens of conferences in photonic applications ranging from medicine to defense each year and publishes hundreds of volumes of proceedings and several journals.  It is a professional organization but has many corporate sponsors.

IS&T
The Society for Imaging Science and Technology emphasizes imaging on materials, both halide and non-halide but is increasingly involved in electronic imaging and color science.  The logo is a silver halide crystal.

SMPTE
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has been the primary standard-setting body for film and video for decades.  While identified primarily with broadcast and theatrical imaging, it has been becoming increasingly involved with medical imaging, computer graphics and computer/HDTV coordination.
